Rocketman…….

Finally got around to watching the much talked about Elton John biopic Rocketman last night. I have to say that despite slight reservations i was pleasantly surprised.

The biggest difference between this and other pop biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody is that it plays more like a musical, with the cast bursting into song at every opportunity. So what you get is the basic story of Elton Johns remarkable rise to fame, warts and all, punctuated by pretty much every track of his being performed by the cast members, and its all the better for it in my opinion. It reminds me very much of a movie i talked about a while ago called Hunky Dory. It has a very similar style to it.

The cast are all brilliant but a special mention for Taron Egerton who plays Elton and Jamie Bell who perfectly inhabits Bernie Taupin.

It’d be very remiss of me not to mention the soundtrack which is pure gold. The cast put their own unique spins on some classic Elton tracks. The standouts for me are Saturday Nights Alright for Fightin’ and the brilliant recreation towards the end of the I’m Still Standing video from 1983, which was brilliantly done.

All in all a very satisfying way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday night. I get the feeling i’ll be coming back to this film in the not too distant future, and i will definitely by grabbing hold of the soundtrack……
