“Have No Fear….The Man of Bronze is Here *Ting*

Doc Savage – The Man Of Bronze starring televisions Tarzan Ron Ely. How I love this movie. Made in 1975, I’m told it’s quite faithful to the spirit of the original comic strip and pulp novels of the 1930s and 1940s.

This is a movie i have very fond memories of. It was doing the rounds in the summer of 1978, on a double bill with Warlords of Atlantis, another movie i adore. I have to have seen this double bill at least a dozen times in the month or so it played Burton Odeon. I knew every scene of both movies and pretty much all of the dialogue. The only other movie i saw multiple times was Close Encounters of the Third Kind which i saw something like 15 times in its three week residency. It’s still my favourite film ever, and to this day, i watch it at least once a year.

It’s a straightforward Boys Own adventure movie. No complicated stolines or deep hidden meanings. Just a balls out slice of family fun.

In the Fabulous Thirties, Doc Savage and his five Amazing Adventurers are sucked into the mystery of Doc’s father disappearing in the wilds of South America. The maniacal Captain Seas tries to thwart them at every turn as they travel to the country of Hidalgo to investigate Doc’s father’s death and uncover a vast horde of Incan gold.

It has the feel of a 70s television movie but the look of something a little more. I loved The Green Death which i can only describe as vapour snakes, if that makes any sense. Take a look and you’ll see what i mean.

Ron Ely most definetely looks the part. A colleague of mine described him quite aptly as being built like a brick s**thouse, which he was. The supporting cast play the whole thing exactly as it was intended to be played and the whole thing is great fun to watch. I’d class it as a very easy way to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon…… and did i mention that theme tune. Now come on boys, lets have a rousing chorus of “Have No Fear – The Man Of Bronze Is Here” *Ting*. Whats with the *Ting* ??? He smiles at the end of that immortal line and his steely eye glints at ya….*Ting*
